Things To Do

Below is a list of thing that you can do to achieve your goal this month.
Choose at least one, and complete it.

  • Have flashlights ready in an easily accessible place and check batteries in flashlights and radios.
  • Acquire and learn how to safely use a portable generator.
  • Create a power outage plan – decide what you can do before, during and after a power outage to minimize the effect on your household.

We count on electricity for heat, food, and medical needs. Many gas appliances even need electricity to run. A power outage is an emergency that often follows another emergency—like a hurricane, tornado, or winter storm. That makes it even more important to be prepared in advance

Bill's Bio from QRZ is below:

The name is Bill and I reside in Walkersville, Maryland; approx. 45 miles NNW of Washington DC. I returned to ham radio in 2009 after a 32 year layoff, being initially licensed in the mid 60s. Equipment includes an Icom IC-736, IC-V8000 transceivers and an old Hallicrafters SX-111 receiver from the 60s. I also resurrected an old E.F. Johnson Viking Navigator CW transmitter and some test equipment from the 60s like a VTVM, Oscilloscope, Tube Tester, etc. This is the first time I have used transmitters and receivers that do not emit a warm glow and heat the shack. I am having fun again with an old hobby; a lot has changed in 32 years.

Antennas are all stealth as I live in a restricted development so I have a homebrew 10 meter inverted “V” tucked under the roof line of the screened area of the deck, a homebrew 20 meter vertical on the open area of the deck (disguised as a flag pole), a homebrew 40 meter inverted U dipole tucked under the roof of the house and a Hustler 2 meter ground plane vertical, also on the open area of the deck. Also using a borrowed 6 meter halo to play around on 50 MHz. I also utilize echolink and CQ100. My only HT is a Kenwood TH-D72.

I am a semi retired Information Technology professional of over 45 years and now operate a small IT consulting company. My other interests are flying my own and others aircraft (major reason for the 32 year layoff from ham radio), sailing the Chesapeake, and of course computers and networks. I also held a commercial first class Radiotelephone license in the early 60s as a broadcast radio engineer, which launched my involvement with ham radio.

  • Release of TQSL 1.14 for LoTW Delayed

Last week, the ARRL announced that the introduction of the new TQSL 1.14 software for Logbook of The World (LoTW) would be available on May 20. Upon further testing, three defects -- now corrected -- were reported after that announcement. Before publicly releasing a corrected version of TQSL 1.14, the software must be thoroughly retested by the Trusted QSL Software Development Team. LoTW users ...
